Two of the most beautiful places in Wales are Pistyll Rhaeadr (Llanrhaeadr Waterfall) and Lake Vyrnwy - both within easy reach of the Bunkhouse.

The waterfall is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. At 240 feet it has one of the single highest waterfall drops in Britain and is over 50 feet higher than Niagara. The arch spanning the falls half way down helps add to the spectacular beauty, as does the rich peat-brown colour of the water. It is deservedly the most photographed waterfall in Britain. The cafe nearby does excellent business.

The attractive village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (only 4 miles from the Bunkhouse) was chosen as the setting for the Hugh Grant film "The Man who walked up a Hill and came down a Mountain". It has a few shops and a whole lot of pubs!

Lake Vyrnwy is widely regarded as one of the most attractive stretches of water in Britain. Created in the 1880's it was built for the purpose of supplying Liverpool and Merseyside with fresh water. Its masonry dam was the first of its kind in the world and is very popular with abseilers.

The whole area offers a wide variety of activities for walkers, ornithologists, canoeists, cyclists and those who love "simply messing around in boats". The lakeside picnic areas and the nature trails too have been planned and developed tastefully.

The RSPB Visitor Centre and the craft workshops are well worth a visit and the Gothic "straining tower", like the recently created Sculpture Trail, is pure fairy-tale.

Only 30 minutes away is Lake Bala which offers everything from White Water Rafting / 'High Wire Adventure' / Gorge Walking / Raft Building Events / Sailing / a Cinema / Ten Pin Bowling / a narrow gauge railway around the lake and many other things.

Slightly further away but well worth a visit are Offas Dyke Path, the Iron Age fort at Oswestry, Kynaston's Cave & Nesscliffe Hill, and the spectacular Llangollen Canal. There's such a lot to see and do - you'd better stop on longer.
